Prestidigitation of Oracle: Don't Cramp My (SQL) Style ... Musings from an Oracle DBA

oh man...i'm getting called out! ;)

As much as I would love to do away with the commas at the beginning, I never would (nor do I have that kind of power).

There is certainly a few benefits (as you mentioned) to have the comma at the front of the line, but I try to write it as I read (or would have others read). Commas never start a line nor come before a word (without a space anyway).

In my younger years, even before I had style, I probably would have been steadfast in my desire to see the demise of the front comma. But you are absolutely right in that if it works, it's fine by me.

Besides, I had to throw a few playful barbs about the Brewers in there didn't I? ;)

No way. You aren't being called out!!!! . It was a good point you bring up. I think there are reasons why tools like Oracle SQL Developer have such considerable functionality for formatting SQL. If I dont' like how you wrote something, I can easily format to my way viewing it and play around with the SQL.

As for the Brewers, you don't really have much of a choice living in Sconnie. Packers, Brewers, Bucks. Maybe that is why I scorned them all and threw my allegiance Merseyside over a decade ago.
